THE HISTORICAL LEGACY OF
NAVAL FACILITY CAPE HATTERAS

Originally constructed in 1958, our property began as military housing for Naval Facility Cape Hatteras (NAVFAC), an integral part of the U.S. Navy’s Sound Surveillance System (SOSUS). This facility played a crucial role in Cold War-era undersea surveillance, with Cape Hatteras making history in 1962 by detecting a Soviet submarine.
In operation from 1956 to 1982, the facility housed Navy personnel and their families in what is now one of the most desirable vacation rental properties on the Outer Banks. After its transfer to the U.S. Coast Guard in 1984, the housing was completely rebuilt from 1993 to 1995, preserving the area’s historical significance while providing modern comforts.

Now part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Cottages at The Cape offers guests unparalleled access to the best of Hatteras Island.
